Mark & Aimee’s FortWhyte Alive wedding in Winnipeg

On Saturday, August 7th, 2010 I had the pleasure of photographing Mark and Aimee’s wedding at FortWhyte Alive in Winnipeg. You may remember them from their engagement session at The Forks back in March. Weddings at FortWhyte take place once normal operating hours are over, so I met Aimee, Mark and their attendants in the late afternoon for some pre-ceremony photos.

Everywhere you look at FortWhyte Alive, there is beauty. Add a gorgeous bride, a handsome groom and an easy going wedding party and it’s a photographer’s dream! We headed out on some “Bison Buggies” and covered a lot of ground in a relatively short time. Here are some of my favourites from their day.

I caught Mark and Aimee stealing one last kiss from either other just before the ceremony.
Of course *the* kiss was spectacular!

FortWhyte Alive has a lot of unique characteristics, including a taxidermied Bison in the reception centre. Aimee and Mark’s wedding had unique details in their own right, like cupcakes laid out in the shape of a bicycle in lieu of a traditional style cake.

Aimee and Mark, thanks for being great – it was truly a pleasure to work with you!

Just Married: Chris & Stevie’s Thompson, Manitoba wedding {sneak previews}

On Saturday, August 28th, 2010 I had the pleasure of photographing Chris & Stevie’s wedding in Thompson, Manitoba. Here are a few of my favourite photos from the day!

All Occasions did a lovely job decorating the hall for the ceremony and reception.Just married!

This sumptuous seafood platter was part of the appetizers… needless to say, everyone was happy and full by the time the actual dinner was over!Watching the family members and guests take a trip down memory lane as the slideshow of childhood photos played was as enjoyable as watching the slideshow itself.

The Anderson Family – Winnipeg family & sibling portraiture in Bruce Park

I’ll be the first to admit that I’m very fortunate… I live right between Winnipeg’s Bruce Park and Assiniboine Park, on a quiet little street surrounded by trees. The Anderson family knew they wanted outdoor photos, so when they arrived for their family portrait session, we opted to head to Bruce Park, which is the quieter park of the two and a great photo location. The only downside was the ungodly amount of mosquitoes; the city was overdue on spraying for them and the 30% DEET bug lotion we applied to our skin wasn’t deterring them one bit. I worked as fast as I could to mitigate the bug bites, but I’m pretty sure everyone had their share by the time we were finished.

The girls were SO GOOD and didn’t complain one bit, despite being eaten alive. Such polite and confident young ladies!The upside to all the rainy weather we had this spring was that everything was so green!

Thanks again for being such great sports about the bugs!

Once I finalized their session, I put my favourite photos into a mini-accordion album for them. It’s a great way to keep your favourite photos close at hand and a wonderful little keepsake.

Ken & Shavon said “I Do!” – Norway House, Manitoba Wedding Photography

Mid-July, I had the pleasure of traveling to Norway House, Manitoba to photograph the wedding of Ken and Shavon. You might remember this couple from their snowy Winnipeg engagement session earlier this year. Norway House is a beautiful community, situated just north of the Northern end of Lake Winnipeg. The area is lush and very green, with views of the water around every corner, and friendly people. My husband and son accompanied me for the weekend and we had a wonderful time!

Speaking of friendly people, Ken, Shavon, and their respective families were absolutely great to spend the day with, and went out of their way to make me feel like a guest. I started out at the Norway House Roman Catholic Church for the ceremony. We next headed into town for some formal bridal party photos by the lake and then it was off to the reception and dinner. I rounded out the evening by heading to the social to capture the first dance. As you will see in the photos it was a day filled with MANY smiles!

This church was built just a few years ago to replace an older one and is very beautiful inside. Luckily it has lots of seating because there was a full house for the ceremony!

The moments just before the ceremony are always interesting… Ken was eager to get things rolling (in a good way!) and Shavon was all smiles.

The flower girls were adorable and Shavon was beaming as her Mum walked her down the aisle.

The gorgeous stained glass was a stunning backdrop as the couple exchanged vows.Sealed with a kiss!I love this photo of the flower girl praying as the Priest gave his blessing; such a sweet moment. Even more smiles after it was official! I couldn’t resist a shot of the guests taking photos of the bridal party once I’d taken mine… it seems a few people brought cameras with them.

The confetti was abundant as Ken and Shavon exited the church! I love the expressions on their faces through the sequence. The beautiful bridal party at our outdoor photo location.

The men bravely went down the hill closer to the water for a few photos. It was pretty short lived, once I discovered that the grass I was standing on was covered with ants and they started crawling into my shoes and biting me! Yikes! The ladies wisely stayed put on higher ground, avoiding the ant-venture (ha ha) and looked lovely doing so. I took a few minutes alone with the very happy newlyweds after all the family and bridal party photos were finished. Shavon and Ken used some of their engagement photos to create favors for their guests. It was a nice way to personalize their day!The reception and dinner was great with some entertaining speeches (including one completely in rhyme!) Next came the cutting of the cake, which I admit I had been eager to taste since learning about it in March. Orange butter cream frosting bliss! The cake was very, VERY carefully driven the 800 bumpy kilometers from Winnipeg and arrived completely unscathed. The social and dance featured a talented live band and dancing well into the night!Thank you both for inviting me to capture your special day. It was a lot of fun and I hope these photos give you joy for many years to come.

Matt and Lauren’s Winnipeg Engagement Session, Part Two: Assiniboine Park

When we first decided on the Red River Exhibition as an engagement session venue, I thought we should probably hedge our bets and do some additional photos in another location. I’ve never managed to blend into a crowd (particularly with a “big” camera, or two, around my neck) and I figured with my luck I’d get tossed out of the Ex before we even began shooting. At least this way we’d be sure to get some great photos that day.

We went to a fairly hidden corner of Winnipeg’s Assiniboine Park just as the sun was starting to set for this portion of the session. Although I’ve listed this post as Part Two it actually happened before the photos at the Ex, on the same day, if you were wondering.

These photos are a bit more demure than the ones taken at the carnival and illustrate Matt and Lauren’s quiet, romantic side, although you can definitely see their playful side too.

Lauren and Matt’s wedding date is just a month away now, and I’m SO looking forward to photographing it!

Matt & Lauren’s Winnipeg engagement session at the Red River Exhibition

From the very beginning I knew that a super fun and outgoing couple like Matt and Lauren would need a super fun and outgoing engagement session to match. We headed to Winnipeg’s annual Red River Exhibition for their engagement session a few weeks ago, and had a lot of fun enjoying all the fair had to offer. We actually did their session in two distinct parts, so I’ll be posting the images in two individual posts.

Matt and Lauren are both pilots so I knew that any unconventional suggestions I might have involving rides wouldn’t make them motion sick! We decided that our session would definitely involve heading out after dark, and some photographs as we spun around on the swing carousel! I thought for sure we’d be “busted” for any photography antics and that I’d get kicked off the ride, so I breathed a HUGE sigh of relief when I got on the ride with my camera gear sans problem. My relief was momentary because about thirty seconds later a carnival worker sat down RIGHT BESIDE ME. Fortunately, it was just a coincidence; he was more interested in taking a break from working and spinning the terrified teenager ahead of us in circles than worrying about me potentially dropping 5 lbs. worth of DSLR onto someone’s head. We got some fun and very memorable shots for our efforts!

We did more than ride the swings of course… a trip to the fair just wouldn’t be complete without some sugary, cotton candy goodness!

As I said earlier, Matt and Lauren are really fun people; the photos from this half of the session reflected not only their fun side, but also their head-over-heels in love side too.

Tristan is Two! – Winnipeg Family Photography in Assiniboine Park

A few weeks ago, I met Tristan and his parents, Amy and Paul, for a photo session in Assiniboine Park. Tristan recently turned two so the park was the perfect setting for their session, with lots of space to run and explore. There was beautiful golden light and thanks to a barely-there breeze, the pond by the Leo Mol Sculpture garden was as smooth as glass.

Tristan had fun splashing his hands in the fountain and it was hard to pry him away from it. Fortunately no one got wet in the process!I love this age… at two, a child’s burgeoning independence is SO present, but at the same time Mum and Dad are still very much wanted and needed for security and comfort. :)

Amy, Paul and Tristan, it was lovely to photograph you and I’ll be stopping by to deliver your new wall art in a few days time!
